Ask any local, there is only one way to enjoy a beautiful afternoon in the magical valley of Ojai – and that is on horseback of course. And what better way to enjoy a trail ride than with a seasoned local equestrian.

The Ojai Valley Trail Company at Oso Ranch owned and operated by veteran equestrian Susan Gruber offers one of the best trail riding experiences. in the valley with over thirty horses that are seasoned trail pros. All levels from beginners to experienced equestrians are welcome.

Gruber, a veteran equestrian, who at the age of 9 years old had her first ride. By the time she was fourteen she was Miss Missouri Pinto Queen and went on to be Missouri state champion.

Each trail ride experience begins with a meet and greet where guests are assigned their guides for the day. Each guide is experienced with years of riding and horse experience under their belt. Once you are mounted on your trusted steed, you will ride along the Ventura River and through the endless trail heads, some of the most beautiful and rural landscapes in California.

With a rich native American history, the Ventura River and Ojai was home to the Chumash, Ojai’s first inhabitants and living here for thousands of years before European explorers arrived. The livelihood of Chumash people was based upon their subsistence for the natural resources available to them – plants, animals, and fish. They found use for almost every type of plant and animal available – for food, clothing, medicine and tools.

Their environment inspired their art, their beliefs, stories, ceremonies, and songs. Trail rides are just one of the many services offered at Oso Ranch young and old alike. Birthday parties and an epic summer camp for kids include grooming and how to take care of ponies, a craft table with horseshoe crafts and coloring pages, a tour of the ranch and a chance to meet all the animals, and misters to keep you hydrated and cool on hot Ojai Valley days. For horse owners, Oso Ranch is also a full boarding facility where the horses have sizable stalls and are fed twice daily.
