California Coastal Horse Rescue

Deep in the heart of Ojai, is home to the California Coastal Horse Rescue.
Founded in 2000, it is widely recognized as safe sanctuary for horses that have been abandoned, abused, neglected and slaughter bound.
Since opening their doors, they have rescued over a hundred and fifty horses and ponies and have helped placed six hundred horses to new homes where they lead peaceful lives.
CCHR is an all-volunteer organization relying purely on the generous support of donors, sponsors, grants and volunteers. Their mission is to create a safe refuge for horses where they will get the care they need, whether its medical treatments or rehabilitation.
Their mission is to always advocate for horses in need.
CCHR matches horses and potential adopters with their horsemanship and riding experience.
When adopting a horse from CCHR the process entails creating an environment in which the new owner is given time to bond with and work with the horse.
Bonding is a critical part of the adoption process. Before adopting a horse, they conduct a home/ranch/boarding facility visit with the purpose of ensuring a safe and happy environment for the horse.
The American Horse Council estimates that there are 170,000 unwanted horses per year that need homes, medical care, and food.
That is a staggering number and unfortunately so many of the abandoned horses go to slaughter and are not lucky enough to get another chance.
Horse rescues are a critical part of saving these soulful animals that give so much to humans.
As Winston Churchill so famously said “There’s something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man”.
Horses have always symbolized the American West and continue to play a critical role in farming, ranching and transportation.
There are many ways to donate to the California Coastal Horse Rescue to help give the horses they have rescued a second chance.
- Sponsor a CCHR horse through Project Stand by Me
- Adopt a CCHR horse. Open your heart and home to a special equine
- Volunteer at the ranch and help care for the horses who have found refuge
- Donate to the ranch to help them with their mission of rescuing and rehabilitating the horses they have
