Sunday Funday at Sunday Designs

If there was ever reason to use the insanely popular hashtag #sundayfunday, it’s when you experience the new woman-owned family business, Sunday Designs, conceptualized by Sunday Rylander and her daughter Michaela.

Originally from Panama, Sunday’s family moved to Santa Barbara when she was in elementary school. Her passion for the outdoors, art and creativity are deep in her DNA, specifically her father, a wild and talented man who has spent his life chasing swells and stories as a professional surf photographer.

Community has always been important to Sunday and was drawn to close knit Ojai small town vibes where she planted her roots with her family over two decades ago.

Working full time for Patagonia for almost 30 years ago as global manager of visual merchandising and switched positions to retail art director about a year and a half ago. Sunday tells Ojai Life and Style she has always had multiple jobs, is always on the go and and overall just loves to be busy.

Sunday started her design business after years of designing items for non-profits, local events and Patagonia. Her iconic hand drawn designs for Ojai, Santa Barbara and Ventura are made with love and detail now available at her new retail location in downtown Ojai.

A colorful array of home and fashion accessories such as tea towels, chaparral pillows, bandanas, aprons, and totes fill the energetic new space on E. Ojai opened last month.

Committed to using recycled reclaimed materials whenever possible, Sunday Designs curated gift boxes, which have been hugely popular, are made of local reclaimed wood and filled with products from local artisans, makers, and farmers. She currently has over thirty-five local artists markers and their goods in the store and is planning on stocking up for the holidays. Sunday also sources small global brands as well and focuses mostly on carrying items made in small batches. Sunday’s ethos is that the unique items she carries should be affordable and for everyone to be able to buy, collect and enjoy.

Sunday Designs is enveloped by inviting atmosphere that caters to all your senses, with treasures everywhere you look. Sunday consciously created the space as a place where locals can shop and gather, placing two stools by the check out area, a conscious design element encouraging locals and friends to come often and visit.

With an inspiring artistic eye combined with incredible work ethic, Sunday’s journey to opening Sunday designs is awe inspiring.

Not only does she continue to work full-time at Patagonia, a store and own a design business, she is also a huge advocate for the community recently stepped down as chairman of the Ojai Parks and Recreation to focus more on the family business. Sunday was instrumental in facilitating the building of the Ojai Skate Park built supporting the youth in the area.

Sundays Design is located upstairs at Tala.
